You already know that brushing and flossing help protect your teeth and gums, but did you know that keeping your mouth clean might also help keep your brain sharp as you age? A recent study has found a connection between the bacteria in your mouth and how well your brain works.
Researchers at the University of Exeter looked at 115 older adults, some with mild memory and thinking issues and others without. They wanted to see if the types of bacteria in the mouth were different between the two groups. The study found that people with more of two “good” types of bacteria – Neisseria and Haemophilus – tended to do better on memory and thinking tests. On the other hand, people with more of a “bad” bacteria called Prevotella didn’t do as well. Another harmful bacteria, Porphyromonas gingivalis (known to cause gum disease), showed up more in those with memory problems.
Many people think of oral health as separate from the rest of the body, but it’s all connected. Some of the “good” bacteria found in the study help the body turn nutrients like nitrates into compounds that improve blood flow, which is essential for keeping the brain healthy. That means having the right bacteria in your mouth may support memory, focus and overall brain function by helping your body use these nutrients more effectively.
On the flip side, higher levels of certain harmful bacteria were linked to lower scores on memory and thinking tests. One of these bacteria – Porphyromonas gingivalis – is already known to cause gum disease. Now, it’s being linked to brain health too.
Your mouth might play a bigger role in your overall health than you think, especially when it comes to your brain. If you have a family history of Alzheimer’s, this information might be especially important. Even if you don’t have genetic risk factors, maintaining good oral hygiene could help protect your memory and mental sharpness as you age.
So, what can you do? Stick to the basics:
