How to Floss – A Step-by-Step Guide

How to Floss – A Step-by-Step Guide

Flossing is a key part of maintaining good oral hygiene, yet it’s often overlooked or done incorrectly. At East Bentleigh Dental Group, we believe that a healthy smile starts with the right daily habit, and flossing is one of the most important. In this blog post, we’ll guide you through how to floss properly and answer some common questions so you can keep your teeth and gums in great shape between dental visits.

The Steps for Flossing Correctly

Proper flossing is important for removing plaque and food particles from areas your toothbrush can’t reach, mainly between the teeth and under the gumline. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you floss like a pro:

  • Get the Right Length of Floss – Start by pulling out about 45cm of dental floss. This may seem like a lot, but it gives you a clean section to use for each tooth.
  • Wrap & Grip – Wrap most of the floss around the middle finger of one hand, and the rest around the opposite middle finger. Use your thumbs and index fingers to guide the floss.
  • Slide the Floss Gently Between Teeth – Carefully slide the floss between your teeth using a gentle sawing motion. Avoid snapping it, as this can injure your gums.
  • Form a C-Shape – When the floss reaches the gumline, curve it into a C-shape around one tooth. Slide it under the gumline and gently move it up and down along the side of the tooth.
  • Repeat for Each Tooth – Use a clean section of floss for each tooth. Don’t forget the backs of your last molars.
  • Be Consistent – Floss at least once a day, preferably before bedtime.

Common Flossing Misconceptions & FAQs

Isn’t brushing enough?

No, brushing only cleans about 60% of your tooth surfaces. Flossing covers the rest, especially the tight spaces.

Do gums bleed when you floss?

They might at first, especially if you haven’t flossed regularly. This usually stops after a few days of consistent flossing. If it continues, consult your dentist.

Can I use mouthwash instead of flossing?

Mouthwash helps, but it doesn’t remove plaque between teeth the way floss does. It should be used in addition to flossing, not as a replacement.

Do kids need to floss?

Yes, once a child’s teeth start to touch, flossing becomes necessary. Parents should assist until children are able to floss properly on their own.
